Large Lake Construction & Renovation

Large Lake Construction   Large Lake Construction   Large Lake Construction

We consider any man made body of water over 100’ x 50’ up to 5 Acres to be in our Large Lake Division.
There are many different styles of construction to achieve your desired out come.

Construction Types for Large Lake Features

Natural Soil on top of PVC or EPDM: Liner & Underlayment are installed and then screened natural soil is installed. The industry standard is 12” – 24” of soil.

Vaneering: Vaneering is done by applying flat stone (4” x 4” up to 6’ x 6’ pieces) individually into mortar on top of either EPDM Liner or on top of underlayment over PVC liner. We have a fiber additive in all of our mortar, which increases the strength, and longevity of the mortar. We also add color to our mortar to match the chosen stone. It is 1”-3” thick and is applied straight on sides of pond or stream to hide/protect liner and to permanently adhere the stone in a desired position. This process also enhances the natural appearance.

Pressed Stone: In this process, mortar is first applied 2” – 3” thick either on top of EPDM liner or on top of underlayment over PVC liner and it is trowelled flat. Then River Rock, and/or Cobble, and/or Pea Gravel is hand pressed into the wet mortar. This method, along with veneering is used to protect liner from wild life or heavy foot traffic.

Loose Stack Large Stone: Stone used is 200 lbs to 6 tons and it is used to line the sides of the lake and streams and it is applied directly on top of the liner with 8 – 20 oz fabric stone pads used as a buffer on larger stone. Other loose rock, soil or pressed stone is used to fill in the gaps.

Concrete: Applied onto underlayment placed over the liner because of the sharp aggregate in it. Concrete is applied a minimum of 3 – 6” thick. Applied straight on the sides of pond or streams to hide/protect liner.

Shotcrete: Applied by sprayer onto a rebar wired cage, over liner.

Falls by Fox, Inc. installs two different types of liner, PVC & EPDM on our large lake projects. The project size dictates which liner product is used.

EPDM – Ethylene Propylene Diene Methylene is resistant to UV from the sun, weathering & high temperatures
PVC – Polyvinyl Chloride is UV sensitive but comes in different thickness and larger sizes, easier to lay as it is much lighter and stretches more than EPDM

Under Layment is used universally on all water features we construct. It’s an 8 Oz Geotextile material that is laid down prior to installing the liner and during certain situations; it is also applied over the liner. It helps to maintain the integrity of the liner and increase the longevity of the feature.

Aeration is a very important factor in maintaining water quality in large lakes. There are several methods of providing sufficient water movement. The preferred method for Falls by Fox is to construct strategically positioned waterfalls. Fountainheads and underwater aerators can also be installed.
